The best way to ensure your plants get these nutrients is by making a simple choice. Choose organic gardening compost instead of the chemical ones. The result will vary tremendously. The health of the plants in your garden is important as our own health. It should never be ignored. Health of a vegetable garden also affects the people who consume the vegetables. Paula Mohadjer from the Cascade Water Alliance explains the different types of soil you may encounter in your lawn or garden. The kind of soil you have in your yard will affect the way you water your plants. Therefore, knowing more about your soil will help increase water efficiency. Soil is made up of air, water, organic and inorganic matter and billions of tiny organisms. But, mainly we want to be concerned with how soil retains water. The three basic types of soil are: sand, silt and clay. Clay absorbs water slowly, so watering too quickly can cause runoff. Sand, on the other hand, absorbs quicker, so it is easier to over water. Silt will be somewhere in between, depending on if it has more sand or clay materials. One way that can increase the water capacity of your soil is to add compost (can be yard waste or decomposed manure).
